With all of this in mind, the next innovation in Web3 gaming looks set to be something that can stand the test of time by attracting both a Web2 and Web3 player base, focusing on gameplay and creating sustainable long-term business models. The compounding effect of building games that focus on earning rather than playing, the results of which have been seen over the past 12-18 months, is that core gameplay, art, and that indescribably “pick up and play" feel are left by the wayside. Simply put, if you build a game for Crypto users, those same users will leave when Crypto cools off, leaving no room for a sustainable user base, at the same time as neglecting a vastly larger, untapped market of Web2 users. With this, if the industry is building P2E games to focus on Web3 and Crypto users, they are exposing their player base and tokenomics to the same fluctuations that determine price action. So the players that did decide to try these games quickly realize that they are not welcome and the rest avoids anything with a P2E tag attached to it. This massive audience is completely underserved or downright ignored by most of the P2E developers, to whom a captivating game design is more of an afterthought. Web2 audience wants games, with engaging mechanics, colorful art and interesting stories. To them, Bitcoin or Ethereum are just buzzwords that they’ve heard on the internet. Web2 gamers simply do not care about your token management plan or what blockchains you support. What’s more, it shows a crucial misunderstanding of the audience by these developers. To simplify a larger debate, Web2 users don’t have the time, nor patience to learn these mechanics. In the classic P2E model, an incredible amount of emphasis is placed upon the tokenomics of the game, of earning and an endless stream of microtransactions all requiring time-consuming knowledge of the blockchain to interact with.
